POSSIBLE Yellow-legged Gull -- Key Biscayne, Miami, Florida (1 Viewer)

Possible Yellow-legged Gull found on 23 March 2011 at Crandon Beach in Miami, Florida. The site is well known for hosting large numbers of Lesser Black-backed Gulls throughout the year. Could this be a hybrid Lesser Black-backed Gull X Herring Gull or the real deal? It would be the first state record for Florida.

Also, here is the photo for the bird in flight:

One detail that bothers me is the slight pink tinge on the webbing, which can be seen in both shots.

-an open wing shot will help (and getting a laro-phile on the case)

how true. something's odd for it being a good michahellis. it's not an atlantis (azorean or madeiran), upperparts too pale. a nominate YLG? well, gape and orbital don't look red on my screen, there's no red on upper mandible in bill tip, bill shape is not the typical male YLG-type, no bright yellow legs. i also share jane's feeling about the off headshape although i usually omit this feature since it's very up to mood. but in this shot: http://www.birdforum.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=314561&d=1300930448 it very much looks like a nice male smithsonianus with yellow legs to me...

regards,

Wing tip looks within the range of YLG, the head shape could easily be down to posture / the way the feathers are being held. The lack of a visible red gape and eye ring could be due to the resolution of the photo but Lou's "vote" for a yellow-legged smithsonianus seems close to the mark IMO. Having said that I reckon that there are one hell of a lot of "Herring" Gull-type jobbies that will remain uncertain at best.

This is not a Yellow-legged Gull of any kind, so to speak. Note the pattern of the outer primaries

Other possibilities could well be in the hybrid camp, such as LBBG x Herring or simply a yellow-legged smithsonianus?

these are underwing and upperwing patterns of typical nominate michahellis (i know cristian won't be angry that i use his pics), taken in bucharest, romania. note the rather blocky distribution of black in wingtip lacking the white tongues on p8-p9 (underwing) of the original bird, which i think is a yellow-legged american herring gull. note p7 and p8 pattern here: http://www.southfloridabirding.com/images/tasphotos/DSC_2103yellow_legged_gull.jpg. the pale orange orbital https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/_w8EUXLctFnM/TYrBNctGZII/AAAAAAAAE38/Ao3hVoU5gw0/s912/IMG_0382.JPG clinches it i think.

cheers
