Hi.

This duck seems too light to be an American Black Duck, but the bill does not match that of a Mallard. Any guesses...

Mallard, American Black Duck, or Hybrid?

Taken in Northern Virginia USA on March 8th, 2011.

Thanks,

Matt

Definitely not a Black Duck--too light. Do you have an uncropped shot or other shots with other ducks for comparison?

Best,
Jim

I do not have a full body shot...I just assumed it was your run-of-the-mill Mallard, so I took a few headshots and moved on. When I got home and uploaded the shots the bill completely threw me off. I searched for a good hour last night and couldn't find any other photos of Mallards with a bill coloration like this.

Definately a Mallard. If anything it's a tad on the pale side for Mallard (probably because the photo was taken in such good light) so no need to consider hybrid. The bill looks fine for female Mallard
