Hi Colonsay, I think your bird is a singing female Chaffinch

Does have a crossbill look to it.
Could well be, the bill looks wide open to me though and although I can't make any wing bars, I've seen fem Chaffs that look like this on angle. A better photo and a better pair of eyes (in my case) would certainly help.

My initial reaction was a crossbill. For info. I saw a lovely red male about 20 mins later, further up the tral.
