Marsh Birds (Oakland, CA, USA)

Been out of the photography for longer than I would have liked, could use some help and/or confirmation on these recent photos from Arrowhead Marsh (Oakland, CA, USA):

  1. Common Goldeneye (female) on the right but...not sure of the little fellow on the left.
  2. Ring-Billed Gulls
  3. Ruddy Duck (female)
  4. Western Grebe

Sorry, I didn't put the location: Oakland, CA, USA; my bad.

What are the differences between the Eared and Western grebes? Is it the white patch at the back of the head?

Proportions are one major difference. Eared Grebe is more compact, with shorter bill and thicker(-looking) neck. This is partly because of the size difference (Western Grebe is significantly bigger).
