A D800 at last (1 Viewer)

V1 is very good

The VI looks better than the D800 to me.
I must admit I expected more detail from the D800.
Hi dave,
I'm not surprised the V1 is so good as I already use it with the 300mm F4 and it seems to match my D7000 with a 500mm F4 at least out to 40 yards. Must try it with the 500mm some more. If only Nikon hadn't hamstrung the afc mode with the Ft1 it would be perfect.
Anyway will have long wait for D800 in the UK so plenty of time to make up my mind.
Neil thanks for posting. Your digiscoping skills are amazing.

I was back out on the mudflats on Thursday with the D800 on the Nikon 300/4 AFS this time as I wanted to test out the TC 20E 111 on it (2x teleconverter)
The light was getting hazy again and the birds only came about 35 - 50 meters at the closest, except for the Marshie that was about 20 meters.
I mostly shot in Crop Mode (either 1.2 or 1.5x ).
I was able to test of some flight shots and was reasonably impressed with being able to AF at f8 on fast flying waders. The image of the large gull was at about 100 meters. I would prefer the 300/2.8 AFS VR but I'm trying to keep the weight down to protect my knees.

thanks Neil , that's what I needed to hear as I'm in same boat as you ( well, not quite ,as you actually have a camera while I can only dream ).

I hope you don't have to wait too long. With the D3s I missed the first round and had to 2 months for the second lot.
I'm taking it down to Sydney tonight to give it a good workout in nice light.
More soon

Thanks so much for the samples Neil. They look great. I'm very excited that you can AF with the 2x TCIII on the 300f4. I thought that lens wouldn't focus with the 2x. One of my concerns if I got an FX camera would be limited reach using 1.4x on 300f4. I'm thinking of going from D300 to D800. I like the idea of having 3 modes: Full Frame, 1.2 and DX, so I'm thinking of not waiting for D400 or whatever the D300 update will be.

Apart from the super sensor the af system sounds amazing on the D800. (ye, one and a half months wait here in japan from now)

Hope the weather is fine in Sydney. Look forward to seeing what you get there.

I´m very thankful for all of those shots, especially the combination of the AF-S300/4 with 2xTCIII.
I got my D800 last thursday and wanted to test it with all of my glass but discovered a tiny spot on the sensor.
Therefore it immediately went to Nikon service. I hope it was only a dirt spot and nothing worse with the sensor itself.
So I´m looking foreward to get it back this week and be able to test it with my AF-S 300/4 plus 1,7TC.
I was thinking of getting a 70-200/2.8VRII to combine with 1.4 and 1.7 and the shining new 2X TC. What I see here encourages me a lot.
But if the D800 with 300/4 + 1,7 Tc should work acceptably (and the weather will be lighter) I can wait patiently for my wallet to fill again...after emptying it for the D800... ;)

Actually , I think the AA filter WRT video is more Canon 5DIII , not the D800 .
Would still be interested if the D800E does return more sharpness , would be good for cropping etc .

I'm in Sydney shooting with the D800 on the Nikon 300/4 AFS and TC 20E 111 teleconverter. What a dream travel combo.
The AF is fast enough to grab onto honeyeaters coming to water which is fast enough for me. I haven't done much flight shooting yet. It's a little noisier than I would like when close up to doves and honeyeaters. This morning I switched to the V1 on a group of Bar-shouldered Doves as the motor drive spooked them.
More soon, Neil
ps jpegs processed in iPhoto . Not my usual process.

Look like pretty nice shots to me. Love aussie honeyeaters but they can be tricky. They don't sit for long posing.....but now I'm thinking 800 or 800E!?

Although the noise of the motor drive was disturbing for the birds at the water hole, I did like the high iso capability and the cropping room. As reference I was shooting next to a Canon 5D Mk 111 two weeks ago and it was much quieter.
I was pleased with this crop on the Red-browed Finch , as even with the 2x teleconverter on the 300/4 , it was small in the frame.

Looks pretty nice to me Neil. Were you using a monopod or tripod? Love the subject too. A real beauty. Thank you for your post.

I was using an old wooden Miller tripod, with a Manfrotto 501 head. The advantage of the Miller is that it has long metal spike legs for setting up in the bush.
I haven't tried a monopod yet but the D800 needs as much stability as it can get to maximise resolution from the sensor.

I'm off to Florida today for my annual bird photography road trip. Will be taking the D800 and Nikon 300/4 AFS and 70-200/2.8 AFS VR 11 and assorted teleconverters , as well as digiscoping kit.
Photos soon.
