Oddly enough it's a female Great Diving Beetle, Dytiscus marginalis. Are you near water, like a pond for example?

Hi Shane

The answer is no :eek!: I really don't know of any garden ponds locally but we have a large Village pool but it is around a mile away. Interesting find then.

But many thanks for the ID, certainly clarification that I hadn't seen this species in the garden before
