Petrels New Zealand (1 Viewer)

Here are two photos of petrels/shearwaters taken off the coast of Kailoura in New Zealand. The first is all black except for white around the base of the tail. I thought it was a Westland but they are supposed to be all black. The second I think is a Short-tailed Shearwater. Comments please.

Agree with Kelp Gull. The shearwater has a Sooty feel. The bill appears a bit 'heavy' for Short-tailed and the rear a bit 'blunt' for Wedge-tailed. As the bird is on a bit of an angle these impressions could be wrong.
