COAL TIT
Hi everyone I don,t normally come to this forum Thou I would like to share
With you what I had seen and videoed my photographic Attempts failed
Dismaly I,m not a fond lover of wasps or hornets, A number of times I
Have witnessed what I (thought) were queen wasps or hornets in our
Conservatory over the years but It was around 5pm this Evening I saw
This creature It was hugh bigger Than any Other I have ever seen In
Lenght It must have been one Inch and a half In lenght There was a
wasp alongside and It dwalfed It In size Everything About It was hugh
In proportion on Its head and back It was clear to see gingery hair
Growing from the black markings I thought It had to be too big to be a
Queen wasp so then I thought of hornet I caught her In a jar and was
In two minds If to let her go I took some video footage from my camera
she was not easy to video and the footage might be to long to download
On to this site I would like to try As a Attachment with this post And I
Did release her in the End Perhaps someone could Tell me More
I could open file here It said It was a Invalid file.

I have just downloaded 3 videos in the video section of this Hornet under Invertebrates under queen Hornet
Haveing seen video Footage of a Similar Hornet there Videoed In September 2011 of a Giant European Hornet
I,m now Convinced mine is the same Species but have they been recorded here before In may Would Like
Some feedback If possible please.

Hi Coal Tit

I'm not an expert on insects but I think that Vespa crabro has a few different 'English' names including Giant Hornet as well as what I commonly use which is just 'Hornet'. Your insect in the jar looks like one to me.

Hi paul

Yes your right In what you say vespa crabro verator Is the english form
And as you say Giant Hornet So most Likely same Species As European
One I have just been reading A fascinateing Article on Hornets And How
Useful They Are And Docile too you would have to read up on them If a
Nest was built Near by they don,t like sudden movements or being
Threatened Thou more Friendly than a wasp, you,d be quite lucky
To come Across them above a line between the wash and the humber
And Apparently not common anyway I think when I say In 46 years of
Being out doors I can,t remember seeing one Anywhere so yes I do
Believe In that statement.
