Great Spot with green cone (1 Viewer)

We have an anvil outside our window and today, a Great Spot appeared with a very green pine cone.

He had two cones, both very green, is this an inexperienced, first year bird (maybe a hint of retained, juv feathers on the upper, back) or might there be an issue with the cone crop this year?

The seeds in the cone will be getting mature now - not germinable yet, but probably worth the bird's effort to extract them for food.

Mature brown cones will have been empty of seeds for several months by now (Scots Pine seed usually shed in April).

Thanks Nutty,
this anvil is right outside our living room window and it's the first time we've seen them with a green cone.

This bird didn't manage to access any of the seeds and left the cone in the anvil.
