The correct equiptment choice. (1 Viewer)

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to birding and completely new to this forum so I'm not sure if this is the correct section for this. I have been planning to purchase a video camera with a high magnification zoom for some time now, do you think that this would be as good as the standard pair of binoculars that you would recommend to a beginner like myself? If not what sort of binoculars would you recommend?

Welcome to Birdforum. If you are a beginner then a decent but inexpensive pair of binoculars should be your first choice together with a good field guide for North American birds. Remember if you go out have a notebook and pencil handy to record date, place and sightings.

A camcorder could come later but basically you will need a HD capable machine but forget about zoom in excess of say 35x as you would not be able to keep it still unless mounted on a tripod. Add to that you have to think about video editing software.

So just for now stick to binoculars and gain some experience in birdwatching.
