alternative to Cristalino Lodge (1 Viewer)

Looking for an alternative to Cristalino Lodge (i.e. same kind of habitat/species). They want an inordinately outrageous amount: US$805 per person in a double sharing for just two nights! Thanks for any suggestions--I have reasonable Portuguese and have travelled in Brazil before...

There aren't a lot of options in that area. You might try Floresta Amazônica Hotel in town (if you've got a vehicle there are places around to explore), and Pousada Rio Azul sounds pretty nice. I've only been around the Cuiaba area, so I can't provide more insight. Good luck!

Fazenda Anacã

There is a new place in alta Floresta called Anacã. It is not as pristine as cristalino but the owner is working hard at attracting birders. The owners name is Fernão Prado and his phone is +556684458376. They also have a Facebook page, but I think they do not have a website yet.

There's a lovely little place called gardens of the Amazon just 300 km from Cuiabá, accommodations are great the food is wonderful and the owners who live there are very nice people. there's no English-speaking guide but there's a couple of local guides who are learning their birds and that could show you around, the place costs only a fraction of what Cristalino would . As far as the birding goes you could find a lot of the same birds as you would find at Cristalino but the habitat is not pristine and there are several species that occur at Cristalino that do not occur in there. Their website Is www.jdamazonia.com.br

Thanks so much Marcelo--this is really useful! Looks like they have some of the same species as Cristalino, but as you say a few are missing. However I notice that Cone-billed Tanager is a possibility at Jardim da Amazonia which is a real plus! Have written asking for their rates... Muito obrigado!

Fwiw, I did hear back fro Rio Azul. They do in fact take independent travellers, although it isn't cheap: $400 per day for two persons, plus $300 for the 4x4 xfer from Alta Floresta. Still, that's half the cost of Cristalino. We may be going there in October, although that's still quite a lot of money for us. If I do go, I'll post about it.

That is interesting. I didn't understand something, is it $400 per day and per person sharing a room or is it $400 per day for 2 people sharing a room?
Thanks,

Dalcio

Dalcio,

The rates I have directly from the lodge are (in Brazilian Reais) per person per day:

Single: 750.00

Double: 620.00

4 or more: 580.00

So for two people sharing a room it would work out to around USD 175 per day per person at current exchange rates.

Cheers,

Jon

Sorry, I should have been clearer about the rates. For those of us from the U.S., the exchange rate is the best it's been in at least 10 years. When I was there two years ago, 620 reais would have been over $300...

I went to Jardem de Amazonia in August 2015 and it was wonderful lodge with great birding. The Cone billed Tanager was actually quite easy from a motor boat ride upstream to an oxbow lake. No need to even walk as the Tanager is seen from the boat!!

We did end up spending three nights at Rio Azul earlier this month. Rio Azul is family-run, and they are very welcoming, and the place really does feel like a home, I imagine much more so than Cristalino. The place is run by a couple and their son, Carlos, who is about 30 and speaks good English. He picked us up at the airport and was with us throughout. We saw quite a few nice birds, including Crimson Topaz, Bald Parrot and Tapajos Hermit, although Carlos is not a bird guide (he knows the birds pretty well, but isn't a specialist), and we don't use playback. We went out on the river every day, with Carlos Sr. piloting, primarily looking for the Crimson Topaz, who only deigned to appear on the last day - we were pretty antsy by then! We also walked the trails on the property, often on our own.

For us, this was the most expensive place we've visited. In addition to the lodge itself, the transfer from Alta Floresta was about $275, and the round-trip flight from Cuiaba was $200 ... and that's when the dollar is strong against the real. However, I would definitely consider Rio Azul if Cristalino is a touch too rich for your blood. Note that, going forward, they're charging in USD at Rio Azul, I believe they said $198 per person, but that's probably only when sharing a double.
