    Incomparable

Without that enormous transport plane for comparison, Brown Pelicans still look big. Not the biggest birds in the world, but definitely above the median.

Plane-spotter story part 3: We can do a motorcade too!

One last comedy shot for the plane-spotter story. It seems the birds had picked up on what was going on at the airport that day too. "Oooh! Motorcade vehicles arriving? We can do a motorcade too!" So here is a "motorcade" of Double-crested Cormorants heading southwards along the bay with Brown...

A colony on the cliffs at Dinosaur Caves Park in Pismo Beach, CA. This was a nice place to photograph pelicans. I had a nice chance at a BIF, but muffed the focus point.

Friday fun 2: the counting challenge

This is just one small section of the shortest of three stone breakwaters packed with birds. Another breakwater is blurred in the background; the third was full of people fishing and that one and the fourth are not visible in this shot. There are at least three species showing in this shot, and...

Friday fun shot: Woops! Missed the landing gear

Brown peli's have at least three ways of hitting the water. They can dive, kind of Peregrinelike, wings folded back and bill first straight down into a school of fish for a catch. They can skid to a stop on extended feet. Or they can stretch their feet and wings out as brakes but then tip...

    The Eastern Version..

...of the Brown Pelican. Driven almost to extinction twice—first by hunting and later by pesticides including DDT—the Brown Pelican is today a shining example of the success of the Endangered Species Act (ESA) and the work of the Environmental Protection Agency.

My wife and I decided to take a day off from unpacking and dealing with things around the house so we drove over to Jensen Beach Park and had a great few hours. I shot this bird while it was in flight and did not realize the sailboat was in the picture.
