This was taken in the backyard this month. Hope you like the image.
  2. Northern Flicker

    Northern Flicker

What a beauty! This is a bird I must get closer to. This shot is heavily cropped. I now know what they sound like, so hopefully I can get a better photo someday.
  3. Northern flicker (male)

    Northern flicker (male)

I missed a trio of flickers preforming aerial courtship maneuvers in the yard, but later in the day one of the males posed for me on a stump.
  4. Northern Flicker

    Northern Flicker

Formerly split under the name Yellow-shafted Flicker, this eastern woodpecker was combined with the western Red-shafted Flicker with both lumped into the Northern Flicker in 1982. There is a hybrid zone extending from Alaska to Texas where intermediate birds are found. The two former species are...

  8. Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker

    Northern Flicker, Downy Woodpecker

I'm not sure what is happening here. I heard a bit of a commotion during a walk this morning. Then I noticed this Downy Woodpecker moving around an opening in a dead tree with a flicker in it. Maybe the Flicker took the Downy's spot?
  9. Northern flicker (male)

    Northern flicker (male)

Another first in my yard! The onset of spring in Connecticut is bringing back our migrating friends, in this case a Northern flicker (one of the few woodpeckers that actually migrate). They inhabit the typical habitat of any woodpecker but are often seen foraging on the ground for insects, which...

Got lucky and caught this guy emerging from his hole. I didn't even now he was in there at first. I was just looking up at the tree and noting the woodpecker holes, then he stuck his head out.

    FLICKERS

Hopefully this will work. This is the video of the two male Northern Flickers having a faceoff in the road. It's only about 21 seconds long as a car came along and made us all bail off of the road.

Walking home from the park, ready to put the camera away and get some stuff done when I see this flicker on the very top of the roof at the front of my home.

The flickers are particularly active this time of year, vocal and drumming on anything they can find.
