    Ravens, on the other hand

were all over the place at Sea Ranch. I heard them constantly and often saw them flying by. I got two posing nearby on fences at Bodega Head, but this was the only one I got a close-up of up at Sea Ranch.

The raven is all black, has a 4 ft wingspan and is over two feet from head to tail. The sexes are generally alike, although females may be smaller. This one is still a frequent visitor to our peanut log.

    He came for dinner....

The peanuts go fast when this guy stops on our deck for a meal. I got this shot through the window and thought the wingspan of 45-46 inches looked like a giant monster coming toward me! Needless to say I missed out on the landing shot when I thought he was coming through the window.

    Common Raven

For some reason, the ravens here in Nova Scotia are the biggest and heaviest in the world. (According to Wikipedia) I believe it. This guy is absolutely huge. Here he's calmly ambling up to a group of crows in order to take over the snacks I put out for them. He looked like a friggin dinosaur...
  13. The other Raven

    The other Raven

There were two of them on the cliff there, possibly mates? or siblings? Note that both had some white specks in their plumage.

    Taking a closer look

The raven was still checking us out, now with his good eye, I guess.
  15. Checking us out

    Checking us out

Fair enough. We watch the birds, and the birds watch us.
  16. Hey! Litterbugs!

    Hey! Litterbugs!

You forgot your milkshake! This Raven seemed to be still yelling at the previous tourists who'd stopped at his viewpoint overlooking the seals and pelicans on the sand spit at Jenner, where the Russian River runs out to the ocean (when Fall floods open the sandbar).

    Who're you calling common?

There were two Common Ravens together alongside the pond at Crissy Field that day. They didn't seem shy about people walking close by them.
  22. Say that again to my face!

Say that again to my face!

Oh, sorry, did I say "common" out loud? Didn't mean to insult you. Just stating your full name.

    Granary with guest

or maybe that raven is the safety inspector come to check whether the acorn woodies have caused structural damage to the light pole?
  24. Somebody turn on the faucet, please.

Somebody turn on the faucet, please.

Finally he made it to the horse trough. This is where people who've rented horses for a ride through the park stop to let the horses drink before returning them to the barn. The water was pretty mucky and warm, though, so perhaps the Raven was waiting for someone to turn on the faucet and...
  25. Kraaaaa!

    Kraaaaa!

As I recall, he wasn't vocalizing. Just panting. Still, it does look as if he's calling out for water, poor thing. Must be very hot wearing an all-black down-lined jacket in the summer noonday sun in California.
