  1. Olive-sided Flycatcher

    Olive-sided Flycatcher

A declining uncommon migrant and breeder, they have the longest migration of any North American flycatcher, wintering as far south as Bolivia. Adults such as this have a mostly dark bill. The males whistle an instantly recognizable "quick, THREE BEERS!" or "What PEEVES you?" with the middle...

    Ollie ollie in come free!

Meet Ollie, the Olive-sided Flycatcher. Here he is calling for beer ("Quick! THREE beers!") and for love ("It's ME here!"). Last summer my sister-in-law said he was calling all summer until it was time to fly south again. This year he was calling when we arrived, then suddenly switched to single...

    Olive-sided Flycatcher

Sometimes the difference between juveniles and adults is more subtle such as in this juvenile Olive-sided Flycatcher showing an all yellow bill, a difference that does not seem to have been previously described. Adults are similar but have a mostly dark bill. Notice also the buff fringes to...

    Olive-sided Flycatcher

This is a somewhat uncommon migrant and breeder, now declining in the San Francisco Bay Area. This species has the longest migration of any North American flycatcher, wintering as far south as Bolivia. The males whistle an instantly recognizable "quick, THREE BEERS!" or "What...

    Olive Sided Flycatcher

Posting this because of behavior. I have never seen a bird tilt head upward and open bill to catch rainwater. The rain was just slacking off when i witnessed this behavior several times.

    One of my August lifers

from California posed much more accessibly for me here on the hotel grounds in Rancho Viejo, TX. In Northern California, the Olive-sideds tend to stay quite high up in tall trees, but this one was on a low-hanging branch, pretty much eye level. So I guess the affinity for great heights is not so...

Only the second time I've seen this flycatcher, and it was above the driveway.

    Olive-Sided Flycatcher (I believe)

I believe this is an olive-sided flycatcher, spotted at Coal Oil Point in Goleta, California

Not a great image, but since it's a lifer it deserves a spot in my gallery.

Could this be an Olive-Sided Flycatcher?

Hmmm ... largish head, perches on dead branches, dark bill, "open vest" formed by narrow white stripe between dark side patches. And the eye-ring, yes, but not all that clearly; also wing stripes a bit clearer than shown for Olive-Sided in my field guide. So maybe another of the far...

    Open Vestments

He is supposed to look like he is wearing an open vest. Birding in the rain--as you can see. My son is my inspiration for nature filming; check it out why at http://www.vbs.tv/watch/the-creators-project--2/meet-brain-farm

    Olive-sided Flycatcher

Pretty sure this is the Olive sided, a straight on view showed its dark vest but this closer view dosn't give that impression. Saw it along the Mississippi on way back from the balmy south.

    Olive sided Flycatcher

These wonderful flycatchers have been passing through Costa Rica lately. Just as one sees them on their breeding grounds, they perch on the very tips of trees like a star or angel on a Christmas tree, and are always found alone. The same day I saw this one at Rara Avis, I also had 5 others in...
