fawn-breasted brilliant

  1. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

Medium-sized hummingbird found in Andean cloud forest from 1,000–2,200 m. Although we saw others at feeders this bird was working the flowers alongside the Otun river.
  2. Telling-off

    Telling-off

And this is the last photo from these hummingbird flash photography sessions that I'm going to upload - one of my favourites. I can certainly recommend the activity - lots of fun, and it's bound to result in some stunning pictures.
  3. Go away!

    Go away!

The right hand bird is clinging to a humming-bird feeder - I think the message is pretty clear!
  4. All mine!

    All mine!

  5. My food!

    My food!

And now for something a bit different - occasionally there would be more hummingbirds wanting to go for the same food source. But note how the much bigger bird very carefully positioned itself on the far side from the smaller one.
  6. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    This time approaching more conservatively.
  7. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

Here's another bird deciding that our carefully chosen nectar spender was a fine perch...

  13. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

Another species that gave us some lovely opportunities. Bold and large for hummingbirds I have a few more quite spectacular (if I say so myself) flightshots of these Brilliants to go.
  14. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    And feeding.

  16. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

Today a flight sequence that shows how a bird manoevures to access a particular flower.
  17. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

These Brilliants took every opportunity to perch when feeding if it was at all possible.
  18. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

You could be forgiven for assuming that there isn't anything colourful on the bird's throat when looking at this picture, and indeed I have few photos where the true colour of this patch is apparent.
  19. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

The most common of the big hummingbirds at Tandayapa is the Fawn-breasted Brilliant. Another species that gave us very good opportunities at photographing it in action.
  20. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    And for today's action shot...
  21. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

Today's `with a flower' shot - this one was a particular favourite with this species, possibly because it was big enough to provide a perch.
  22. Fawn-breasted Brilliant

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant

There are three of the big Brilliants that can be found at Tandayapa, and of those, Fawn-breasted was seen most frequently by some margin. These are big bruisers, and they don't really back down when it comes to getting access to the feeder. This is also a species which gave us some amazing...

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant (female)

    Fawn-breasted Brilliant (female)
