  1. Orange-crowned Warbler

    Orange-crowned Warbler

This individual appears to be undergoing preformative molt with retained juvenile wing coverts showing pale wing-bars. The orange on the crown is never easy to see and absent on juveniles. This is presumably the brighter subspecies "L. c. lutescens" ranging along the West Coast of North America...
  2. The Orioles are a bit ticked

The Orioles are a bit ticked

Orange-crowned Warbler seems to like grape jelly too. Orange-crowned Warblers are small songbirds. Compared with other warblers, they have noticeably thin, sharply pointed bills. They have short wings and short, square tails.
  3. Orange-crowned Warbler

    Orange-crowned Warbler

This warbler popped into our garden where it posed for photos. They are a fairly common breeder in much of California, but this one is a different subspecies. It's one of the gray-headed types, either "L. c. orestera" from the Rocky Mountains and Great Basin ranges, or nominate "L. c. celata"...
  4. Bouquet

    Bouquet

Ran into a large bouquet of late season OCW's in a couple of Tamarind trees last week. There were about 30 of them total with a few YRW's mixed in. Was a treat to witness the frantic action. :)

  12. Orange-crowned Warbler

    Orange-crowned Warbler

This is one of the earlier breeding warblers to arrive each spring, usually arriving in our area in March. The orange on the crown is never easy to see. It's really at the base of the crown feathers and only shows when you are looking down at the bird. This one was singing from the top of a...

That's what it was doing in yesterday's image. Waiting for the Orioles to leave the jelly so it could do some feasting ;)
