This is the female (The male is my wife's favorite hummingbird) I love their white boots, and how tiny they are, so very very small, adorable!
  3. white-booted racket-tail hummingbird

    white-booted racket-tail hummingbird

My wife's favorite hummingbird. Between the boots and the twin rackets tail, she's enamored with it. This bird is very small, even for a hummingbird, it only looks large in the pic because of the camera zoom. This one is the male, but the female (next pic) is just as adorable.

    White-booted Racket-tail

More Racket-tails - this one showing that the streamers can have a mind of their own.
  8. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

Note the colours in the rackets and on the upper tail.
  9. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

I can't help but wonder what the streamers do aerodynamically in this kind of situation.
  10. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

I have a few more of these Racket-tails - the rackets alone guarantee that there's something interesting to see. This is a sneaky bird realizing that when we refilled the flower with sugar water some of it got spilled.
  11. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

Tail streamers looking anything but stiff here.
  12. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

These tail streamers here look almost stiff, but they can behave completely differently, more as if they had a life of their own.

    White-booted Racket-tail

This is what happens when two of these birds are aiming for the same feeder, which is already occupied by a third.

A few more females of this particular species, very different looking from their male counterparts.

    White-booted Racket-tail

And here quite a different perspective of the same species.
  18. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

In contrast with yesterday's Woodstar on the same flower one can see that the Racket-tails preferred to perch if possible.
  19. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

All of us were very keen to get pictures where the rackets giving this bird its name did something interesting. This picture illustrates the kind of `interesting' that we were hoping for.
  20. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

I quite like to have a shot of each species flying where one can just see the whole bird in profile.
  21. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

    Here's today's `action shot'.
  22. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

Yesterday we had the male with his spectacular rackets and the white boots, today it's the very different looking female. These are the second smallest hummingbirds to be found as regular visitors at Tandayapa, but the males can be quite aggressive, I thought. The females were more likely to...

    White-booted Racket-tail

Here's a species that gave us a lot of great photo opportunities - with the tail streamers there was always the chance of getting something interesting. This bird certainly does its name justice! The split of Booted Racket-tail into three species hasn't (yet?) been accepted by Clements.
  25. White-booted Racket-tail

    White-booted Racket-tail

I like the clear intent that is visible in the bird's expression. Nothing is going to come between it and its food.
