orange-crowned warbler

  1. Orange-crowned Warbler

    Orange-crowned Warbler

This individual appears to be undergoing preformative molt with retained juvenile wing coverts showing pale wing-bars. The orange on the crown is never easy to see and absent on juveniles. This is presumably the brighter subspecies "L. c. lutescens" ranging along the West Coast of North America...

The Orioles are a bit ticked

Orange-crowned Warbler seems to like grape jelly too. Orange-crowned Warblers are small songbirds. Compared with other warblers, they have noticeably thin, sharply pointed bills. They have short wings and short, square tails.
  3. Orange-crowned Warbler

    Orange-crowned Warbler

This warbler popped into our garden where it posed for photos. They are a fairly common breeder in much of California, but this one is a different subspecies. It's one of the gray-headed types, either "L. c. orestera" from the Rocky Mountains and Great Basin ranges, or nominate "L. c. celata"...

    And it loves grape jelly

That's what it was doing in yesterday's image. Waiting for the Orioles to leave the jelly so it could do some feasting ;)

    Orange-crowned Warbler

Of the 5 subspecies, our Western version seems the least grey and most yellow. Love the feet.

  22. Tickled Orange

    Tickled Orange

Can't figure if this is a late Fall migration or an early Spring migration. Either way, I am so glad I spotted it ;)
  23. Orange-crowned

    Orange-crowned

Was hearing these all over the woods, but only got a few glimpses, and never with a crown showing.
  24. My second orange-crowned

    My second orange-crowned

Hope I got this ID right. Orange-crowned warbler? As is typical, it's not showing the orange of its crown. That only shows when it raises the other crown plumage to reveal it. But aside from the missing orange, all the details seem to match the field guide description and I can't find another...
  25. Orange-crowned Warbler

    Orange-crowned Warbler

We were sitting at the table looking out the window when this warbler landed at the peanut butter log on our deck. I was lucky to get a couple pics before it flew away.
