    Martial Eagle

Africa's largest raptor, it is unique being the only member of the genus "Polemaetus." This adult looks similar to the adult Black-chested Snake-Eagle but Martial is much larger and has spotted underparts. Martial Eagle has always been scarce but it has declined seriously in recent years largely...

One of the biggest and most powerful raptors in Africa. Looking at that impressive wingspan, you just know they can tackle big prey!

The Martial Eagle was arguing with a Tawny Eagle over who should get feasting rights to a dik-dik (very small deer) that was lying dead next to the road. No real contest, but it meant that the Martial Eagle posed for us just 2 m from the road. Fantastic view, and I am so glad I got the shot.

A bird I always hoped to get a close-up of but didn't really expect to. We spotted this one in the distance and stopped to take a few shots. Chicken for lunch

this magnificent eagle had just stolen a scrawny chicken from the Masai village; more of a snack than proper lunch. Not called 'bellicosus' for nothing....

Martial Eagle (immature) in Nossob Valley, South Africa

With only few bird of prey species in the area, you would think a large eagle in the Kalahari should be easy to identify - but it was not. In fact, the only large eagle with fully-feathered white legs that does occur in the region is an immature Martial Eagle. Note the striking resemblance to...

We were on Busanga Plain in Kafue NP in Zambia when we came across this huge Martial Eagle. It had caught a baby croc which was stuck in its talons. The croc was so heavy that the Eagle couldn't take off!!

Now what do I do with it?

An overzealous Martial Eagle caught himself a White Stork for dinner, but it was too big to fly off with, so he just stood in the shallow water trying to figure it all out.
