red-capped parrot

  1. Long!

    Long!

In a parrots usual upright pose, you maybe don't realise how big these Red-capped Parrots are, with that long tail. They're really rather beautiful.
  2. Taking a rest?

    Taking a rest?

I didn't see too much of the female Red-capped Parrots, I guess they were mostly on nests. Did she come out for a bit of peace and quiet do you think?
  3. One of the big ones

    One of the big ones

Red-capped Parrot is rather large at 36cm (14 inches), even for a parrot. They called almost be called "rainbow" though, couldn't they with all those colours on them. Nice birds.
  4. A welcome from a youngster

    A welcome from a youngster

We got back to the house and found a juvenile Red-capped Parrot up a tree waiting to greet us. Well actually he was stuffing his face LOL Not good shooting skills I'm afraid.

  6. We have lift off!

    We have lift off!

There was a large water bowl in the middle of the lawn and at one point it got surround by Red-capped Parrots. There was also much coming and going and I just manage to catch this male leaving the party!
  7. A rather pretty lady

    A rather pretty lady

After seeing the male Red-capped Parrot earlier on, suddenly a female appeared. Wasn't really expecting to see her, thinking she might be on a nest. Even though her colours are lessened, she is still rather attractive I think.
  8. And now for a parrot

    And now for a parrot

They're really rather big these guys but rather handsome I think. Beautiful, aren't they. Strangely, I only saw Red-capped Parrots in Alex's garden.
  9. Pretty bonnet

    Pretty bonnet

Ok you've been very patient, here at last is the female Red-capped Parrot! She really blends into the background, doesn't she.
  10. A big 'un

    A big 'un

Back at home Red-capped Parrots were waiting to greet me. Another lovely new addition to my list. Such beautiful guys these. The females are nearly as pretty, but in a different way.... you'll have to wait for her!
  11. Up close and

    Up close and

.... personal. I couldn't resist... was close enough that I needed to zoom right back to get him all in, so thought... well why not? So I did... brought you a head shot instead. I don't often do these!

    Red bonnet

... well ... ladies don't wear caps, do they LOL Such lovely parrots these Red-caps, and she sat rather nicely on the fence.

    Red-cap

And just along from where the honeyeater was one of the handsome Red-capped Parrots came in for a feed too. Nice-looking birds these.
  14. A big juvie

    A big juvie

Back at the house, high up the top of the trees Judy pointed out a juvenile Red-capped Parrot! I didn't realise they had fledged already. An awkward angle of course, so not the greatest of pictures.
  15. Taking F(r)light

    Taking F(r)light

After Alex had put the bowl of food on the grass, it attracted at least 7 Red-capped Parrots as well as the Laughing Doves and Common Bronzewings (but they didn't get much of a look in!) There was much coming and going of these parrots, so I couldn't resist the opportunity of taking some flight...
  16. Coast Guard

    Coast Guard

Red-capped Parrots are mostly seen along the coastal areas of this corner of Western Australia around the Albany area. The females and immature birds are much less showy than the brilliantly coloured male.
  17. Police or goblin

    Police or goblin

... take your pick please. Actually there's quite a few definitions of Redcap when you do some research LOL. Hope you don't get bored with seeing these guys, they were such a novelty for me, and I only saw them in Alex's garden. Such handsome parrots too. They have a very similar tail to the...
  18. Goblinette

    Goblinette

.... or whatever the feminine term is for a Goblin LOL. Thanks to Jonno, who found that a Redcap is also a goblin from the Borders (Scotland/England... particularly Northumberland) folklore. She looks rather benign, really, not the described .... malevolent and murderous!!! I didn't see so...

    Military Police

Back at home after our leg stretch, more joys awaited, the first of which was a Red-capped Parrot. Big, and colourful and wonderful and a joy to see throughout my stay with Alex and June. Re the caption: The Military Police here are nicknamed Redcaps as that is the colour of their berets. I...
