    Short-billed Dowitcher

The two dowitcher species (Long-billed and Short-billed) can be very difficult to distinguish. Now that they are in breeding (alternate) plumage we were able to confidently identify this one as a Short-billed, but also confirmed the identification by call. Note the salmon color to the underparts...

    Short-billed Dowitcher

In winter plumage the two dowitcher species (Long-billed and Short-billed) are very difficult to distinguish. We identified these dowitchers by call and heard only Short-billed. Short-billed is more locally distributed than Long-billed in winter, being confined to large bays with extensive...

    Feeding Frenzy

One Dowitcher, most likely a short-billed, in very active feeding behavior. At close to 800 mm equivalent and handheld, there is a bit of wobble unfortunately, but I liked the feeding behavior and I hope you will forgive me.

While I was photographing a few Dowitchers sleeping in the lagoon, another group arrived and spent some time setting in, giving superb views of their wings upraised.

    Am I Beautiful ?

or am I beautiful ? This is a juvenile Short-billed Dowitcher, very lacking in pigment. There are normal birds immediately left and behind it. I found this bird that was present for only one high tide.

    Short-billed Dowitcher

This is a bit of a rarity for our area but this one has been handing out on the mudflats at a local riverside park for a few days now. It has been in the midst of a flock of peeps (mostly Least Sandpipers). It appears to have an injured left foot as it mostly hops around on its right foot while...

    Short-billed Dowitcher

Thank you to Hawkeye for noting this is a Dowitcher and not a Lesser Yellowlegs. After further reading, I think it is Short-billed. Taken at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge, an excellent place to spot migrating shorebirds at this time of year.

    Short-billed Dowitcher

A personal favourite of mine, I think because of the low angle (achieved by lying flt out on the ground) and the colourful background!
