    Black-and-white Mason Wasp (Zethus spinepes variegatus: Vespidae) Ca. 2.5 cm (1.0 in) long. It is surrounded by Lovebugs (Plecia nearctica: Bibionide) 6-8 mm (0.25-0.33 in) long. The larger lovebugs are the females. The plant they are on is Frostweed (Verbesina virginica: Asteraceae).

    Image taken with my bridge camera. I don't know the ID of this insect. I presume it is a wasp. I like its greenish eyes. I am very grateful to Nora who helped me with the ID. It is a yellow sand wasp. Here in Europe, it is very similar to the species Bombix rostrata.
