1st year Northern Goshawk? Quebec, Canada (1 Viewer)

jasperpatch

Amy, Brit in Quebec.
Spotted this afternoon, soaring over woodland/ frozen swampy area. First thought at the time was Coopers, but this bird has a lot of barring and the tail looks better for Goshawk. Probably a lot of obvious features one way or the other, so any tips welcome.
I've seen an adult Goshawk once in the area, and Coopers semi-regularly.

Thanks.

I don't know if Cooper's can look like this, but it certainly looks like a Gos by European standards... big, heavy, powerful looking bird...

Thank you both. Yes, it does look very bulky and powerful in the photos. At the time it just looked graceful soaring against the blue!
Thanks again.

Another mark for Goshawk - tail bands are a bit narrower, and there a 5 dark bands rather than 4.
