2016 - World Yearlist Record Attempt (1 Viewer)

No pelagics planned for Florida. His USA trip is fairly short, covering only peninsular Florida (2.5 days), northern Minnesota (1 day), New Mexico, and California. We will do our best!

and no one should stress about it, the world record has already been set, just make sure you all enjoy the birding :t:

Not bonus species... he is coming back to Miami on Monday. He just wanted to avoid going through a day without adding new species, but all the species he added on the layover are ones we are highly likely to see again when he comes back shortly.

24 species added for Jamaica but presumably not complete as Noah also added:-

Jamaican Crow
Jamaican Owl
Yellow-billed Parrot
Black-billed Parrot
Jamaican Mango
Chestnut-bellied Cuckoo
Plain Pigeon
White-tailed Tropicbird
Greater Antillean Elaenia
Jamaican Lizard-Cuckoo
Stolid Flycatcher

All the best

After finishing in Jamaica, Arjan is now at 6.615 species and has added 35 species there (exactly the same number as Noah and a little bit below Ronald's prediction).

And my assumption that the species in Miami were bonus observations was because of the misunderstanding that it was a planned stopover and no layover and that he would add the "planned" species on Jamaica on the same day (what he didn't do unfortunately).

All bar two of the species in my post added.

So presumably the USA leg now visiting Florida, North Minnesota, New Mexico and California before Japan, Taiwan and finishing in Vietnam......

Because of Noah's effort last year, it is easy to think that this is somehow normal behaviour but in reality it is a superhuman feat of stamina!

I said the same thing to a friend yesterday!

I joined Arjan on the very first day of the year. To me that feels like ages ago, but he's been birding every day ever since. Imagine the alarm clock going off an hour before dawn every day. And looking for night birds - say - once every other day. The stress of having only one shot at several targets every day. And even more killing: all the travelling. All the planes, the car rides, changing rooms > 150 times in a year... Arriving late somewhere after a day of travelling and then get up before the crack of dawn the next day.

I'm usually already completely wasted after one birding trip!

OK - my predictions:-
Currently - 6,615
Florida - 35
Minnesota - 25
New Mexico - 30
California - 40
Japan - 60
Taiwan - 40
Vietnam - 60
Total - 6,905

So even if he misses 7,000 mark, he'll be close enough to show that it's a real possibility and encourage some admirable lunatic to attempt it in the near future.

Indeed and whatever happens, he'll record a number which almost everyone would have considered impossible on 1st January despite Noah's effort!

As I mentioned earlier, his itinerary in Vietnam, just in the south, only allows for a maximum possibility of 39 species, of which 5 or so are tough in the limited time. If he had the chance to alter slightly for a day in the north (Tam Dao) then he could possibly get another 10.

That are 162 species if I counted correctly. So some more than Paul estimated for the US leg - it will be interesting how Arjan will do in the next roundabout 10 days! Hopefully better as predicted - as always :)...

Sorry. I do recall now.

Many thanks.

Indeed. Hopefully. (A few in that list shouldn't be available eg Alder Fly & Veery.)
