A WEEK IN SAMOA, May 2013 (1 Viewer)

How the heck does a person ID a black or brown noddy in flight anyway? Especially if they've never seen a noddy before?

Absoloutely bro. They drove me nuts when I first saw them in their hundreds from a ship, all the same size, but which one:eek!:. They're almost always in nuts lighting conditions that can make either of them look anything from quite pale to very dark, with contrasting or maybe not wing coverts, and a glaring white crown that is ambiguously extensive.

When (IF :-O) seen together the size difference is pretty obvious, as is the longer bill of Black Noddy. Or of course (that old one) it's obvious which they are when you KNOW what one you're supposed to be seeing (yeah right).

But then I'm probably just shite at identifying birds.
