Algarve Pipit Sagres today (1 Viewer)

It was never one that I was going to put my house on, however if nothing else, it’s certainly shown the occasional limitations of field guide ID pointers…single “non classic”images not for the faint hearted.😮

There is no doubt that a photo of a pipit taken in isolation is tough.

I would be unhappy with it as RTP. I believe the uppertail coverts are not black centred enough, the streaking on the flanks is not 'blobby' enough (more fine streaks, the scapulars are quite plain, the pale mantle streaking is well within variation of Meadow Pipit and maybe not strong enough for Red-throated. I would not ID one or the other from the hind claw length.

I would go Meadow.

Brian
Thanks, will go Meadow - clearly the hind claw length is not as much of a given as I thought.
