we were told these were Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs

To me they look the same size are they the same or is it correct they are the two and if so which is which

Agree. The 2 species's bill lengths sometimes nearly overlap in length (certain individuals). Here, though, we can see each is clearly longer than the head width—even taking angle into account. In the comparison photo at #3 we see how thin lesser's bill often seems.
