Arctic sea ice likely to hit record low next week

The area of ice is low in sat images, but optically doesn't look like lower than in analogical days of August '2007.

On Sunday (2012-08-26) the Arctic ice area shrunk to 4.1 mln km2 (1.6 mln miles2), the lowest level since satellite records began more than 30 years ago. The previous record was 4.3 mln km2 (2007). And the ice area will continue shrinking 2 weeks longer.

It would appear that the sheer volume of ice in Antarctica, especially in glaciers, is pushing so much into the sea that local sea temperatures are depressed, allowing the extent of sea ice to persist longer over the year than it has done previously...
