As a distinct bumblebee entirely black with a crimson to light red tail, I had this one in my book as a Red-Tailed Bumblebee Bombus lapidarius, until on the computer, I saw the two thin white bands.

I still think this is B. lapidarius. I wonder if the grey bands are a photo artefact?
I'd say definitely, they're catching the sun and shining whilst the area in between them is in shadow, it's just the way the hair tracts have separated.
