Hi

Anybody any ideas on best places to go in Berlin at end of August to see birds that you can't see/that are difficult to see in London?

I am going for business this weekend but might get an afternoon to travel around (public transport only)

I'm thinking of Wannsee and Spandauer Forest at the moment, but no idea which part of these places to go or which bus to take - they are very big!!!

Thanks in advance

Reuben

Hi,

difficult to say which birds You can find in Berlin and rather not in England.
Where do You stay in Berlin ?
Public transport is shown here
http://www.bvg.de/

Wannsee is easy reachable. A station from city train S-Bahn is near the lake.
But there are mostly some gulls, Mallards, Coots.
Other place in the lake is island Pfaueninsel.
You need additional bus connection and a short ferry trip.

Next place to see White-tailed Eagle is Nuthe Nieplitz ( 40 km from city centre ) and lake Rietzer See ( 65 km ).
But for this You need regional train and a bike.

Railway from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Goetz take between 45 - 55 minutes.
Another 8 km with bycicle.
Maybe contact Lutz Manzke in Trechwitz. He is very often at the lake.

Railway from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Beelitz Stadt take 45 min ( every 1 h ).

Also Great Bustard area of Buckow near Nennhausen ( train Berlin Nennhausen every 1 h ), regional train and bicycle is needed.
Train from Berlin Spandau to Nennhausen take between 30 - 40 min ( from Berlin Zoologischer Garten 10 minutes more ).
Additional 6 km to watching tower.

thanks very much. I'll see whether my friends feel like going to these places.

If not, I'll have to just try and see what I can see - I'll let you know if I have any success!!!

Thanks again

Results...

So anyway, I went to Berlin and as expected, I didn't have time to go to anywhere outside Berlin.

I did however, manage to find the time one morning to go for a walk with my binoculars around a park which was local to where I was staying, Fritz-Scloss Park, which is a fairly small park in the Moabit area.

And I was extremely impressed by the number of birds present, there was little bird waves everywhere!

It was quite difficult to see them because the vegetation was quite thick, and my knowledge of bird calls is rubbish. But I still managed to see lots of Blackcap, Willow Warbler, Pied and Spotted flycatcher (abundant), Nuthatch (everywhere), Treecreeper, Blue and Great tit, Song thrush, Robin, Blackbird, Jay, Hooded Crow, House Sparrows and Woodpigeon. I also had a possible Garden Warbler (couldn't get a good view) and a small warbler with two wingbars and strong eye stripe. Again, I couldn't get good enough or long enough views, it was constantly moving, but was quite interesting - according to my bird book, any warblers like that e.g. yellow browed etc, are only very rare visitors.

Any ideas?

Elsewhere, I also had Grey and Pied wagtails, probable Goshawk, Starlings, Swallows, Sand Martins, and during a brief walk in Tiergarten, Mute swan, Grey Heron, Mallards and Coots, more Nuthatches and Tits and a male Redstart.

All in all, I would say that, comparative to london parks, which generally have less vegetation, the birdlife was more abundant. And the residents/joggers etc are much less used to seeing birdwatchers, I got a lot of quizzical looks. If only there were more birdwatchers in Berlin with local patches like we have here in london, I'm sure there would be a lot of interesting records.

Keep up the good work and thanks again for the tips.
