Birding Gunung Leuser (1 Viewer)

Hello, I am planning an owling trip to Sumatra and am interested in hearing from any birders who have visited Gunung Leuser National park in Sumatra. I am planning on birding around Berastagi and Bukit Lawang. I have a specific interest in owls, but really any information on good birding trails etc would be much appreciated. Cheers, Iain

Hi Iain, I can't really help as I found GL very hard going indeed - we observed something like 30 species there in 3 days, with Whiskered tree-swift and Rhinoceros hornbill (also heard only Great Argus and Hooded pitta) about the best we managed.
I've a feeling that the forests are horribly depleted there, particularly given the volume and variety of birds available for sale in Medan. The forest is absolutely stunning though, and Bukit Lawang is a nice place to relax.
Hopefully someone chips in with more (better) info - enjoy your trip!
