than it might be a Hooded Merganser. A species, I have only seen in captivity before.

Yes! It's an immature female Barrow's Goldeneye. You were so close with your fist guess but note the mostly dark lesser and median coverts. It's actually the same bird I posted in the gallery here. Congratulations!
