What and Why (1 Viewer)

Photo taken in February in California. I was unsure what these birds were myself until they came around and I saw them from the side, so if you can tell what they are from this view I would be grateful for an explanation.

American Wigeon - neat rectangular white belly, dark vent, white axillaries, somewhat pointed tail feathers.
