Thought some of you contemplating buying a better lens might be interested in these comparison pictures of a budget Canon 75-300mm Canon EF USM lens versus a semi professional Canon lens the Canon 100-400mm F4.5/5.6 L IS USM.
I recently upgraded from the older budget Canon lens and have no regrets; bird pictures are amazing compares to the old lens.
The subject is a new build block of flats about half a mile from my house. Both lenses were used at full reach (300mm and 400mm respectively) both set to F5.6 and camera at ISO400. Shutter speeds - both pictures taken about 1/1000 second. The camera was supported during both shots. Same light conditions applied; the images being taken within 3 minutes of each other and cropped accordingly.
To say the difference is staggering is an understatement! Note the incredibly improved definition on the semi Pro lens and the issues with purple fringing on the budget lens.
Uncompressed, uncropped original images are available upon request for closer examination.
