Moltesen, Irestedt, Fjeldså, Ericson & Jønsson (in press). Molecular phylogeny of Chloropseidae and Irenidae – cryptic species and biogeography. Mol Phylogenet Evol. [abstract]
Based on our molecular findings, plumage distinctiveness and contemporary distributions we propose that several subspecies be recognized at the species level.
Chloropseidae:
  • Chloropsis (aurifrons) insularis
  • Chloropsis (cyanopogon) septentrionalis
  • Chloropsis (cochinchinensis) moluccensis (incl chlorocephala, kinneari, auropectus, serithai, viridinucha)
  • Chloropsis (hardwickii) melliana
Irenidae:
  • Irena (cyanogastra) ellae
  • Irena (cyanogastra) hoogstraali
  • Irena (puella) andamanica
  • Irena (puella) tweeddalei
[Irena cyanogastra melanochlamys not sampled.]

can anyone with access tell us what's split please? It's really annoying being between institutions without access!!

There seems to be a slight glitch:
p913 'Today I. c. ellae occurs on Samar, Leyte and Bohol and I. c. hoogstraali occurs on Dinagat and Mindanao islands.'

but table 1 p 906
'Irena cyanogastra ellae ZMUC105602 Dinagat'

The bluebird on Dinagat should be hoogstraali (Dickinson et al. 1991) as would be expected biogeographically. That would give only one specimen of ellae - from Bohol.
