April 27, 2015 Boat Trip in Jinshitan Bay

Was out at the beach with my son when he said he wanted to go for a boat ride. A quick phone call later he, our dog Ginger, and I were out on the water.

Gretchen, yes the tail is quite clear in flight. Black-tailed are not that common in these parts so I was happy to see that one. Saw it again today after work.

Thanks Dev. Yes, this week is always crazy here in Dalian with migrants everywhere.

See the pictures below and please feel free to comment yes or no to the White Eye question. Maybe birders from more southern coastal areas of China have more experience with Japanese White Eyes? I saw a large group of Chestnut-flanked White Eye here yesterday afternoon and photographed what could be a Japanese White Eye in the group. While this would not be that rare, Japanese White Eye are scarce in this area but probably very overlooked as well.

The first batch of pictures show Chestnut-flanked. The second batch are what I think could be the one Japanese White Eye in the group. What do you think? All photos in the second batch are of the same bird. I was disappointed to not get an underwing shot as it flew away.

Good day Tom,

I read the short, creative commons attributions, article, "What does it mean to preserve nature in the Age of Humans", by Ben A. Minteer, and Stephen Pyne published in The Conversation. I thought it may be of particular interest to you, teaching in China. http://theconversation.com/what-does-it-mean-to-preserve-nature-in-the-age-of-humans-39987

For all of us here it is of importance because scientists are now discussing such topics as, "some have argued the traditional focus on the goal of wilderness protection rests on a view of “pristine” nature that is simply no longer viable on a planet hurtling toward nine billion human inhabitants."

Jinshitan to Zhuanghe Yellow Sea Coast May 6, 2015

Full day class trip to see Black-faced Spoonbill and hopefully get some flagged Godwits in Zhuanghe. We had a beautiful day in the field with temperatures around 15-20 with no fog. We split our time between the Zhuanghe and Pikou shorebird sites as well as some brief forest/wetland stops. After watching a documentary and writing journals about Black-faced Spoonbills, it was nice to see 7 in the wild.

Pikou Shorebird site

On the trip, we stopped at the Biliuhe Shorebird site just north of Pikou. This is a fanastic wader photography place as the entire group of shorebirds come towards the viewing position as the tide recedes. If in the right place, all of the birds fly directly past you on the way out to the mudflat. Here is a sample of sitting there for 40 minutes at the right tide time.
