Time for some more self indulgence, this time dealing with damsels and dragons. As my birding normally takes place in the morning I tend to miss quite a few of these. During 2016 I missed a couple of fairly easy species, Hairy and Four-Spotted Chaser but I did manage to catch up with eighteen species in the county and of these I got pictures of fifteen.
My highlight was finding Small Red-eyed Damselflies at Weldon, although this species has expanded its range since it first arrived in the UK I just didn't expect to find them so close to home. I was also happy to get some decent pictures of hawkers, in the past I've struggled to get anything worth keeping.
The three species that I didn't photograph were Large Red Damselfly, Emperor and Black-tailed Skimmer and a target for next year will be to address this. If I can't find any Willow Emeralds this year (2 have been reported at Finedon Pocket Park very recently) then that will be my other challenge for 2017.
The pictures are Brown, Migrant and Southern Hawker, Broad-bodied and Scarce Chaser.
