Hi

We're in Dresden for a couple of nights next week. Are there any areas in Dresdner Heide reachable by public transport or on foot where we can look for a few birds and get the year list off to a good start?

Best wishes

Chris

Well, according to Wikipedia you can access various points (chiefly the southern parts) via the DVB bus lines 61, 64, and 80, as well as the tram lines 7, 8, and 11. For the latter (line 11), possible stations are "Elbschlösser" the hilariously named "Mordgrundbrücke", or "Plattleite". Not sure which one is the best as it's been a while since my last visit.
Klotzsche (local train station) could be an interesting entry point due to its access to the Prießnitz, which, according to the Wikipedia page, supports a number of interesting species.

We got the 11 to Mordgrundbrücke and then took a three hour loop (a map might have been useful☺) into Buhlau. Birds were mainly dispersed although there was a concentration where the path (L7?) crossed the boundary between broadleaf and evergreen woodland and a single foraging flock of perhaps 100 birds. Highlights for us were several Crested Tits and numerous Treecreepers, I think both species. Blue, Great, Coal, Willow and Long-tailed Tits, GS Woodpecker, Nuthatch, Goldcrest, Chaffinch, Jay and Raven all noted.
