Fully black bird with half-moon white under the wing in Baraboo WI on 1/4/2022 (1 Viewer)

This was a very large bird the size of a hawk but was more woodpecker like behavior! There was no red at all! It was super unique! Unfortunately it is not the best pictures but will at least give you a good idea of what it might be...

Thank you in advance for your patience with me!

The red crest would not have been visible from the underside of the bird. The shape and the wing pattern is spot-on for Pileated Woodpecker.

To be clear, I saw the bird in the tree and watched it for about 2 minutes and it wasn't until I reviewed all of my photos that I realized I got the picture of the unusual markings on the underside of the bird. I saw it flying over my head, noticed the weird markings and it's pretty large size (about the same size as a small duck).
