it is a 1st winter (1cy) bird and to me looks more like a strongly bleached large male American Herrring Gull.

Thank you. What do you mean by bleached? Image adjusting? I tried to make it very close to original, you can check the mallards near.
Faded due to sunlight and general wear.
Could you give the date, please? Thanks (This should always be given, but is especially important when - as here - the state of moult and wear affects ID.)
