Day 6

Down to Lochaline for the ferry to Fishnish. Decided on Mull as Bev hadn’t been before.

Stopped the car to just past Lochdon to watch a stunning male Hen Harrier with a Ringtail appearing a few miles further on. Interestingly, diesel at Craignure was cheaper than where I live in Neath!

Through the Glen we had a brief view of a Golden Eagle whilst a Kestrel landed on the verge next to the car.

A brief stop off at Pennyghael for coffee and we were on our way. Now the weather turned. From sunshine to hale and snow. Made things a bit more difficult. On Loch Scridian we had a great view of an Otter swimming toward us. Did not linger long as a photographer was also trying to get a shot.

Over at Loch Na Keal a Red throated Diver was very close in to shore and at this stage we decided to call it a day. Visibility was cut right down by the weather so we headed to Tobermory for grub. Good choice as the venison casserole was very good. Back on the ferry it appears we were lucky to get back. Ferries to Craignure we’re all cancelled and the boat driver had a helluva job landing at Fishnish.

Dropping back down into Polloch gave at least 5 Woodcocks. The caretaker said the valley attracted them in the Winter.

So a very enjoyable trip with a good bunch of mates. Not too much in the way of birds but just nice to get away. The cottage was absolutely stunning with everything needed for a very comfortable getaway. Perhaps with the exception of practically zero wi-fi. Even the Welsh tapas were pretty good this year - Christmas pudding, cheese, beef and tea cakes:p

The trip back was pretty uneventful. Ferry from Corran was cancelled which resulted in a little detour. The mountains around Glencoe looked amazing with their covering of snow.

Thanks for tips all. Ptarmigan were out as after 2 months the sciatica is only now beginning to ease.

We’ve started discussing next years trip and Cornwall maybe on the cards.

Rich
