Hi,

Thank you for having me on this forum.

I am translating the book "Peregrine" by J. A. Baker, an English author.

Why could he be at times calling peregrine falcons "hawks"? Could it be a generic name for birds of prey among bird watchers at that time (1960s)?

Hi senior and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I'm not too why he would do that, but it does seem that "hawk" is often used to mean any of the 'smaller' birds of prey (I don't me eagle sized). But for more definitive information, you would be better to ask in our Information Wanted forum where more people are likely to see it.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news.

Historically it was once known as the duck hawk in North America but the Peregrine Falcon is not a Hawk and is a lot smaller than our Red-tailed Hawk.

Hi senior and a warm welcome to you from those of us on BirdForum! Enjoy ;)
