Having looked and looked again, I'm pretty sure the apparent head marking, including the apparent eye, is in fact a leaf that is obscuring almost the entire head
Yes, I said that there is a twig/branch running through the bird where the eye appears, so it really can't be the eye. Leaf makes sense too ...

what a pitty that this isn't a quiz picture and the observer knows the solution. really, and I had the first impression as Roland and got a Wryneck vibe.
But I think now, that more pictures could well make this a Lesser spotted Woodpecker.
I hope for more pictures, and yes I would leave it unidentifiable too.
