ID this bird call : Scottish highlands (1 Viewer)

I was camping by a the Abhainn Rath river in the west highlands of Scotland. A flood plain flanked by mountains, all covered in sphagnum bog, occasional birch woods in the valleys. I heard a bird call that started at dusk and went on into the night. Attached is a sound file of my impression of it. The real thing was a bit faster. Any ideas?

Snipe. Good imitation! 🎖️
The sound is made by the outer tail-feathers each time the bird goes into a dive - rather than being vocal.

Yes! I thought woodcock at the time but when i looked up woodcock and snipe calls they were nothing like that. Explains why it was very hard to pinpoint where the sound was coming from. Thanks!
