Illegal hunting in Lebanon (1 Viewer)

Education does work though - I found that once people are aware both of the value of Lebanon's wildlife and the treasure they have (and it is a fantastic place to visit!), and that there really is a negative impact of their actions, hunters could be converted to conservationists.

Agreed 100%...we long wait for that day to come:t:

Hi guys, whilst new to this thread I know the original poster personally and follow this thread and the whole issue of illegal hunting avidly.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kuyrVAdDX0&feature=related

Whilst we are all aware of the grim reality through the images brought to us, a video found by a fellow birding friend brought to my attention the cruelty of the practise of hunting in the middle east, Levant and Med.

Whilst posting this video will do nothing to change the situation directly, I felt it necessary to show just what the attitude of many hunters is like.
I feel that birders who have a conservation driven agenda as well as an interest in lists etc should try and encourage those not so interested to try and help do something about the problem also!

Thanks

I would personally stick the arm of the scumbag responsible for that into the same trap:C - highlights how large elements of the human race are simply the lowest form of vermin:-C

It truely is horrendous. I won't post anymore videos, but this is perhaps the most cruel thing I have seen - it shows not only illegal hunting, but the methods of hunting that are persued in the Middle East

Thanks Johny for the links !! some really sad videos you posted here...

Lebanon isn't the only problem, birds face such threats throughout the whole Middle-East

One of the main problems behind this is that practically every man and his dog in the Middle East is armed to the teeth. It'd probably be nigh on impossible to crack down on this sickening saga whilst those arms are there and it'd be even harder to crack down and confiscate them, that is if it's even illegal to possess enough firepower to level a small village in some of these Middle Eastern countries. The picture so often painted of life in the Middle East is that you need an arsenal just to keep yourself and your family safe.

This thread is important, although saddening, and sickening to many (including me). These are considered "cultural" practices in many places, which is hard for others of different cultural backgrounds to relate to, understandably.
Driving cultural change is a big job, but we must continue to illustrate that this is little more than basic human nature (we can do better than basic nowadays, I think), with little real cultural basis, in my opinion. It is reducing the natural resources the whole biological world depends upon, not just the human species.
In the 21st century it is simply counter productive for these communities to reduce their natural and economical resources ($s seem most important to many folk), these places and hunting practices are reducing their capacity to produce food and develop econmoically (survive).
They are making themselves, and the rest of the world a poorer place for the purposes of mostly male bravado (that's the basic human bit).
It is a shame, and a selfish and increasingly ancient attitude that this kind of slaughter is considered acceptable.
It isn't just restricted to the countries mentioned, it occurs in other places including some areas of rural Australia and other more "developed" countries, often in low socio-economic places where education is limited.
Often, leading by good example is the best one can do (that is what this thread is doing, I hope). There is always lobbying governments and signing petitions too).
Kind regards, and heads up, we're all making a difference by illustrating how these activities are selfish and reducing the ability of humans to live sustainably.
Be positive! It will change :)

I agree Si. I find it sickening what goes on in these examples but most of all I find it difficult to reconcile in those nations where we should know better. This link illustrates my point. Human population now over 7 billion and natural habitats continuously shrinking means that human-kind have to reconsider their actions and what might have been acceptable in centuries gone-by should be considered abhorrant and unacceptable now and in the future.

Great bitterns have had countless millions of Euros spent on them and 52 EU LIFE projects are involved with their conservation.

Another couple of pictures, saddening as always. That honey is of course still alive.

How sickening! Can someone please provide a link where we can contact the Lebanese government, and a link to the website/Facebook page where these pictures are being posted?

By the way, has anyone noticed that in one of the pictures skylark posted (the one with the stuffed animals in white shelves) there appears to be an endangered Ethiopian wolf behind the fox-like canid with the raised tail (compare with attached picture)?

The brazeness of this lard-ar%e photographing himself engaged in such criminality is what gets me:C

It wouldn't suprise me Cristina, there are pictures of oryx, hyena and all sorts with some giddy hunter posing next to them.. for some the psychological thrill of shooting a rare animal is what makes the "hobby" so great to them

Hi ,

I am lebanese and a hunter too, and it saddens me to much to see how bad the reputation we are having... I want to assure you that most hunters aren't like you are showing. Of course while showing those images it will reflect on the whole community. It is not their fault anymore, the hunting law must have been voted 5 years ago and regulations must have been implimented a long time ago but when you have a government represented by a terrorist grp and while the rights of the majority of people are not respected dont expect that birds rights will be!

These pictures has been taken in the south or in the north of the country where no law is respected... I want to invite the person who took them to go to the midd in the mountains and see how people are respecting these procedures: No killing in huge amounts it has never exceeded 50 birds and you can trust me we are still applying a law regulating hunting since 1975 and i passed 2 nights in prison coz i did the mistake and shot a female song thrush in the begining of november and i regret it . We are picking our empty shells after we leave. Hurs of hunting are from 6 am till 10 am and from 14h till 17h in the season and we have forest guards payed by the community in each city/village not even by the govrenment to watch this and check what was hunted.

Those who are criticizing what is happening in Lebanon, do not shut your eyes on your own mistakes... reading you we can see that in Europe we do not hunt, no law is disrispected while everywhere laws are being violated... and what makes me laugh the most is that an Irish is talking about disfunctionality ;)

I want you to remember also that all hunting expeditions from Europe and America to the African continent to hunt wild protected animals, they aren't criticized... Lebanon counts less than 200.000 hunting licence while Europe and America there are more than 20 M and to tell you that what you consider hunting in amounts in lebanon do not represent 5% of what you are killing there . It dosnt justify killing raptors pelicans and i am totally against and i agree it should be banned and sanctionned in all over lebanon by the governemnt and not by forest guards as it is the case.

@JoeStratford: thanx for commenting on those 2 goons, i couldnt have said it better. Hunting in lebanon will be regulated and environnement will be respected.
