Could anybody tell me what insect this is? a damselfly?

yep, it is the male of the damselfly Calopteryx splendens, a really beautiful species.

The related C. virgo has the wings all green in the male sex.
The larvae of both species live in clean running water, I think.

Hello Joern,
Are you sure about that? In the U/K mature males of C.virgo have an almost totally blue wing colouration, the female wing colouring is a purple-brown shade.
