Las Vegas in June any birds? (1 Viewer)

Hi,
my employer is sending me to a conference in Las Vegas in June. I probably won't have much spare time and definitely will not have personal transport.

Am I likely to see anything of interest (bird wise!!) locally?

Many thanks,
Des.

far too hot for birding in LV in June. Without transport I think you could be struggling for much of interest. But Nevada does have a good sized bird list so if you can find the time there should be be interesting birds not too far away. With transport you would get some good birds!

The day time temps will be around a hundred. Don't despair, however. Some of the casinos have incredible inside botanical displays with birds, etc. Also, native birds to the area often hangout in the palms at casino entrances, etc.

Cheers guys,
I thought the temperatures would be a problem.

Any ideas what species I may encounter in hotel grounds/parks/palm stands etc?

Thanks LB,
the first site looks useful I'll have a read.

As for "exotic birds performing amazing feats" at the Tropic Lounge, my wife has warned me to stear clear of those sort of places!! ;)

Had a family holiday that started in LV some years ago in July. Very hot ! Only birds I remember around the Strip/hotels were American kestrel and Great-tailed grackles. I did see a verdin in trees around one of the malls and had loggerhead shrike at Red Rocks canyon , nearby. Sorry , but I wasn't really birding at that point of the holiday.

Thanks cheshirebirder.
First time I've ventured to the US so almost anything will be new apart from Starlings, Pigeons and House Sparrows.

You need to hire a car and get out of the city. Nearby (4-5 hrs drive, just down thr road really) Grand canyon (north rim), zion park in Utah and Eastern mojave Calif all good places to check out. I'm told there are now California condors released in the grand canyon. Also the north rim of the grand canyon at over 9,000 ft may be a little cooler than LV

I was there last June/July, you need to be up very early when it's 100-110f in the day and very hot up til midnight (have plenty of bottled water on you)
Never managed to get to the Henderson preserve, but it's the best place in Vegas itself. Lots of noisy Grackles around the hotels, bit more life up by the golf course/driving range... and Chipmunks ;)

Des,

Have a great time and certainly take in a show. Have a look at this attachment. If it can't be opened let me know and I'll send it to you in some other format. I compiled it a few years ago for a winter trip to Las Vegas. It's just some internet information about birding sites in the city. It has excerpts from various trip reports. Most locations would be an easy cab ride from the strip. I can't vouch for accuracy but we used it as a starting point for our trip. I would recommend a rental for one or two days so you could visit (1) Corn Creek Farm and (2) Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve/Las Vegas Wash (the latter two are near each other). There are a few good trip reports on this forum which I'm sure you've seen. Good luck.

Thanks Joe,
I've printed that out. I'll just have to see if time allows me to get to any of the sites as it will be a working visit.

Regards, Des.
