Some Updates

19 September 2018 my cancelled Lesvos Trip
While I should have been flying out to Lesvos last Saturday 15/09 , I woke up on the Thursday with a severe sciatic attack, rendering me immobile and in acute pain. Although I had been suffering with lower back pain over the few days prior to the 13th , there was no indication that it would effectively leave me horizontal for the next 5 days. At the moment I still can't walk as the problem seems to have migrated to my left hip and leg, appearing to follow my hamstring.
None the less, I have managed to access my lap top , for the first time in many days and will up date sightings from my good friend Mark Cassidy , whom I should have been joining for this trip, along with others on the Lesvos Bird News and Birders Facebook groups.

My sympathies, can imagine that must have been frustrating to the extreme, as well as painful. Get well soon.

27 September 2018 - 4 Corncrake shot by hunter

27 September 2018
It has been reported on Lesvos Bird News Facebook group that 4 corncrake were shot by a hunter on Lesvos.
IMPORTANT :Any references to "people" should be read as individual birds.
Here is the Google Translation of the report:
"Crime Poaching in Lesvos - Dead 4 people of a species threatened worldwide with extinction"
"Four crex crex, four people of a bird species endangered globally, killed a hunter in the wider Acresi area of Lesbos. The crex crex, a bird species known for its characteristic rugged cry, belongs to the same family (Rallidae) with the waterfowl, the waterfowl and the waterfowl (Rallus aquaticus), however, unlike most birds of the same family, lives on land. Crex crex is a globally threatened species and is included in Annex I of the Wild Birds Conservation Directive and Annex II to the Berne Convention.

According to a post on the official site of the Hunting Federation of the Archipelago, the Bundesländer carried out his service in the wider region of Arkasius (Lesvos) and during his hunting trials he found that one of them had hunted four crex crex ). A lawsuit has been filed for hunting of a species that is not allowed to hunt and is included in Annex I of the Wild Birds Conservation Directive.

From the posting of the 2nd CMO, the poachers legally held a hunting permit, since filing a lawsuit (no arrest or confiscation of funds) is exclusively concerned with the hunting of an unauthorized species. The fact that a person with a hunting license does not know the birds that are allowed to hunt or know but knowingly kills four people of a species that is threatened worldwide with extinction is in any case very serious and should concern all those involved in the shooting decisions on hunting in Greece."

The full article appeared on a Greek Website yesterday and can be seen here.
