Pleased to end the year with a new species for my life list!!
I went out to an area on the left bank of the Danube in
northern Budapest this morning, as the nice www.birding.hu
website has said that there were several Long-tailed Ducks
(Clangula hyemalis) to be seen.
It was an immaculate day - brilliant sunlight and not too cold
(around +5C) - though chill by the waterside.
I started off with a nice male Goldeneye, many Mallard, a
Little Grebe, Cormorants flying past, a few Coot, lots of
B-H Gulls, some Common, one larger (see Gull section); and
then these 5 Long-tailed Ducks. They were surprisingly close
to the shore, which is a sloping gravel 'beach' with boat ramps
every so often. They flew once when a cruise ship passed, so
I was able to see their flight patterns, too. There seemed to be
one male (pink bill) and 4 female/juvenile.
Here are 3 of my photos.
